This article is intended to introduce eighteen "Double" Doubles methods and provide compositions for each.
The only commonly practised twin hunt Doubles method is Grandsire although Antelope, Newark, Wollaton and their reverses are also rung. The structure of these methods is Plain hunt below the treble and the work of the method above, or vice-versa if the method is reversed.
All four methods can, however, be doubled with the work of the method being both above and below the treble. These methods are given below with their place notations.
1) | Double Grandsire | 3.1.5.1.5.3.5.1.5.1 | le 12453 |
2) | Double Antelope | 3.145.5.1.125.3.125.1.5.145 | le 12534 |
3) | Double Newark | 345.1.5.1.125.123.5.1.5.145 | le 12534 |
4) | Double Wollaton | 345.145.5.1.5.123.125.1.5.1 | le 12453 |
In addition their front and backworks can be mixed (e.g. Grandsire below the treble and Antelope above) giving rise to another twelve methods. These are also given in the form work below the treble/work above the treble, with place notations. Also added are Double Court and Double Portington.

Table 1 shows extents for these methods. Calls are given in bracketed pairs, the first being made at the half lead and the second at the lead end.
The composition for group 1 methods is as published by Edward W. Martin (R.W 1985 p.721). The group 2 composition is simply a transposition of this necessary to preserve truth.
Anthony P. Smith provided the compositions for Group 3 methods.
Group 4 methods use a composition first rung to a quarter peal of Double Portington on 22nd April 1990 at Howden Minster. This has been modified to give a 240 and applied to those methods in group 5, each change occuring at hand and back stroke.
Of the eighteen methods I believe that only Double Grandsire, Double Portington, Antelope/Grandsire and Grandsire/Antelope have been rung but all except Double Court (which has 6 consecutive blows in one position) satisfy Central Council rulings. Antelope/Grandsire is named Breaston Bob and Grandsire/Antelope Spondon Bob (RW 1965 p624). With the exception of the true Double methods these could be given names of their own when rung for the first time.
The following is a key to calls given in the table, these can be found in part 1 of the Central Council's collection of Doubles methods. Calls not in this collection are given in full.
