Winchester ringing is excellent

Nearly 50 ringers met [May 5th] at St. Andrew’s Church, Owslebury for the Annual District Six-Bell Striking Competition.

Mr. Alan Elsmore, from Eling, judged the striking. The band from Winchester Cathedral were the winners, their ringing being described as excellent by Mr. Elsmore in his summary. The band from Hursley came second and from Romsey third. Other bands taking part were North Stoneham, Alresford Deanery, Micheldever, Winchester College and Southampton University.

The Ringers’ Service at St. Mary the Virgin, Twyford, was conducted by the Reverend John New, vicar of Micheldever. His address was on the theme of Christian Unity.

The ladies of Twyford provided a genuine ringers’ tea which was truly appreciated.

Since Mr. A. P. Smith was absent Mrs. Jessie Kippin took the chair for the Quarterly Meeting in her own inimitable style. The meeting which was both lively and enjoyable closed in the early evening and was followed by further ringing at Twyford.
