LIBRARIAN AND ARCHIVIST’S REPORT

The George Williams Memorial Library has been more extensively used in its Winchester Cathedral home, with about 20 loans and further quick references in 2000. I have observed that most references have been of an historical nature, and this gives me some guidance for a book acquisitions policy.

The Library is sited in the Winchester Cathedral ringing chamber, available for readers and borrowers when the tower is open for ringing, and by appointment at other times. If I am not present, Gail Cater and Graham Grant have agreed to provide access to the books. The standard loan period is eight weeks, with a liberal renewal policy for serious studies and special problems. The Cathedral Office at No. 1 The Close can accept returned items marked for my attention during normal office hours or through the letter box, but no messages, please, other than written ones.

Thank you to the members who have sent me contemporary and past material of historical interest for the archive. Please continue to do so. Service sheets, press cuttings of events not covered in The Ringing World, group photos with names etc are welcome; all with dates if possible. The collection of archive material held at the Hampshire Record Office is available for study. Catalogues of the HRO bell-ringing archive and of the book collection are on the W&P website. HRO Catalogue entries in the 20M94 series are W&P submissions in recent years; the other entries complete the subject index for bell-ringing.
