The Social Committee expanded this year, merging with the organisers of the Mid-Monthly Meetings and Refectory Duties. The main social event of the year was the Dinner, which took place on Saturday 21st April at Winchester Cathedral Refectory. Numbers were slightly down this year, with only 69 attending. Susan Smith, the Master of the Salisbury Diocesan Guild, was the Speaker, and Mike Winterbourne provided the after-Dinner entertainment with his reduced version of “Cinderella”. A survey since the event has shown that support is still strong for the Dinner to retain its format and venue for the present, and so we hope to see a higher attendance again next year.
The Mid-Monthly Meetings have taken place on the middle Wednesday of each month from March to October. They run from late morning through lunchtime and afternoon and visit each of the mainland Districts at least once a year. I think everybody who has enjoyed these events would like to thank Philip and Margaret Carter, who are now stepping down from their role as organisers, for all their hard work in co-ordinating these events.
Carrie Eisenhauer has continued to supervise a group of between 12 and 15 ringers who meet 3 times a year to help in the Cathedral Refectory on a voluntary basis. It is hard work but a most enjoyable day. Three ringers always play some handbells which is very much appreciated by the visitors and staff.
