REVIEW OF BELFRY RESTORATION ACTIVITY

Broughton, St Mary, (6, 11 cwt in G) - Minor overhaul of the ring, including work to the clappers, bearings and rope falls, to improve the general “go” and handling of the bells. Completed 3 June 2003. (Matthew Higby & Co Ltd).

Catherington, All Saints (8, 8-2-20 in A) - Augmentation of existing ring of six to eight by the addition of two new Whitechapel trebles c/w new ringing gear. Existing six-bell timber frame repositioned within the bell chamber with additional timber framework added, and some existing ringing gear overhauled. Dedicated 21 September 2003. (Whites of Appleton).

Crawley, St Mary (5, 6-3-5 in A) - The third bell which had been cracked in the crown and removed by Guild members for welding, was rehung by the same Guild members in March 2003 upon it’s return from Soundweld in Newmarket. Following this and previous work by the Guild to facilitate the formation and retention of a local band, and in response their increased use of the bells, the parish is now actively considering further professional work in due course to overhaul and rehang the complete ring, based upon reports already obtained from the trade. (W&PDG).

Leckford, St Nicholas (5, 8-2-4 in A) - Professional maintenance and overhaul of the installation including clearing out the bell chamber, tightening of the bell-frame and bell gear, renovation or replacement of the tenor pulley block, refurbishment of clapper assemblies, and repainting all metalwork. Believed complete. (Nicholson Engineering Ltd).

Mattingley, [Dedication unknown] (2, circa ¾ cwt) - Restoration of these bells to swing chiming. The older bell is dated at circa 1180 making it one of the oldest in Hampshire, while the larger bell is of 15th century date. Completed April 2003. (Whitechapel Bellfoundry Ltd).

Shalfleet, Isle of Wight (2, weight unknown) - Removal of cast-in crown staples and rehanging in the existing bellframe of the two Mears bells, the larger with new/refurbished fittings including new Elm headstock; the smaller on its existing fittings. A photograph of the refurbished larger bell prior to re-installation is currently on view on the bell hanger’s website. (Matthew Higby & Co Ltd).

Steep, All Saints (6, 6-0-13 in B flat) - Overhaul and refurbishment of ringing gear including fitting new gudgeons and ball bearings to bells 2 - 5 and renewal of existing ball bearings of bells 1 & 6; tightening frame and fittings and cleaning belfry. Complete. (Whitechapel Bellfoundry Ltd).

Wield, St James (Upper Wield) (1, circa 5 cwt) - Rehanging this Roger Landon (1448) bell for swing chiming in the existing frame, on a new timber cannon-retaining headstock with new wrought iron strapwork etc. Despite its age, the five principle tones of this bell were measured as being within 5 Hz of “Simpson” tuning. Completed February 2003. (Whites of Appleton).

It is understood that work in the following locations has not progressed during 2003:-

Alton, All Saints (3, 12 cwt) - Replacement of the current ring of three with a new lighter ring of six more in keeping with the dimensions of the tower. (It is understood that Nicholson Engineering Ltd is the preferred contractor). Believed not yet started as fundraising not yet complete.

Chilbolton, St Mary (3, 7 cwt) - A general overhaul of the ringing gear including rebushing clappers, cleaning bearings, replacing pulleys and tightening and painting frame and fittings. (Preferred contractor unknown). Believed not yet started.

Hursley, All Saints (10, 14-0-0 in F sharp) - Replacement of lower poorly proportioned and increasingly “flexible” timber six-bell frame of 1880 by Hooper and Stokes. It is understood that this project also now includes plans to augment the ring to 12. (Preferred contractor not known). Not yet started.
