STRIKING COMPETITIONS COMMITTEE

The striking contest calendar in 2011 was full, with inter-tower competitions on 6 and 8 bells planned, the inter-District 8 bell competition on Guild AGM day and the Inter-District 10-bell competition in September.

Unfortunately, although there were three entries for the inter-tower contest at Romsey, a late withdrawal rendered the contest unviable and it was cancelled. The two teams who would have participated were invited to join the six bell contest at Broughton, where a lively competition was judged by Geoff Dodd and Martin Rice from Newbury.

The eight bell Inter-District contest was held at Ryde, as the AGM was located in the IoW District. This entailed the Convenor and the Guild Master in much fruitless searching for a judge. Nobody was willing or able to travel to the Isle of Wight, even though costs would be reimbursed. In the end the Convenor judged the competition from a very pleasant garden in the sunshine, next to the church.

The ten-bell inter-District competition took place at Whitchurch, with John Manley and John Harrison from the Bracknell area as our judges. Despite the cool, overcast weather and enjoyable morning was had by all.

There has been some discontent expressed by contestants regarding two matters: firstly, the 50p per rope towards costs was not popular (I inherited this as an established practice from the previous Convenor) and secondly, it was felt that we should hold the contest, no matter how many teams had entered. These are matters that need to be considered by the Guild if it decides to discuss the future of striking contests, particularly in view of the costs involved and the difficulty in finding judges.

The Inter Tower 6-Bell competition was held at Broughton on Saturday 21st May 2011, judged by Geoff Dodd and Martin Rice from Newbury.
