SOCIAL COMMITTEE

In 2012, the annual Guild Dinner was held on Saturday 28 April, and some sixty members gathered at the Holiday Inn, Winchester. This venue proved popular once again, with its smart modern facilities and a well-stocked bar - including the all important real ale! Both meal and service were excellent, and the Guild Master, David Strong, thanked the organising committee, as well as welcoming the guests.

The evening moved on in traditional way, with our Guest Speaker being former Winchester Cathedral ringer, Philip Gorrod. Always a popular friend to return amongst us, Philip’s speech was both witty and thought provoking, as he compared our own with the Suffolk Guild, where he is now Chairman. After proposing a toast to the Guild, the reply on behalf was given by Nigel Herriott, Chairman of the Ringing World and recently returned resident of the Guild, now ringing at Romsey Abbey. Both speeches were a real highlight, and much enjoyed by all.

The Social Committee had also organised a successful raffle, with some superb prizes including a complimentary meal and wine for two at the Bishop on the Bridge, Winchester, and Marks & Spencer vouchers, alongside the traditional alcohol and sweets! This raised £157.00 in total, with the sum being divided between the Bell Restoration Fund and the Guild.

At the AGM in July, when committee elections were held, Charlotte Colliss, Julia Clarke and Clare Griffiths all stood down as members of the Social Committee, thanking especially all those who had enthusiastically supported and attended the annual dinners. A new committee has yet to be formed, but it is to be hoped that members will step forward to take on the role, and bring fresh ideas, so the Guild can continue to come together in much valued social events over the years ahead.
