REVIEW OF BELFRY RESTORATION ACTIVITY IN GUILD TOWERS

Works completed during 2013:

Alderney, St Anne. The existing ring of six bells have been augmented with the addition of six new bells to form a ring of twelve, all hung in a new steel frame. Four of the existing six were re-tuned to remove the tuning “stretch”. The new bells were cast by Taylor’s. A redundant 15th century bell by Reginald Churche (ex Ipswich) will be hung alongside the new bells for stationary chiming. (Matthew Higby & Co Ltd.)

Heckfield, St Michael. The front three bells have had their crown staples removed and their canons have been retained. The bells have been rehung in the existing frame with new fittings. New forge tops to existing clappers, and the existing wheels were adapted to fit the new headstocks. The three bells have also been turned. New cast iron rope bosses have been fitted. Hinton Admiral, St Michael and All Angels. The bells have been rehung on new fittings in the existing frame. The wheels have been re rimmed and adapted to fit the new headstocks. New sheaves have been fitted to the existing hardwood pulley boxes. Some strengthening of the bell frame was required. (Whites of Appleton Ltd.)

Minstead, All Saints.The existing ring of five bells has been augmented with a new treble to form a ring of six. (John Taylor & Co.)

Portsmouth St Agatha’s RC. A project to install a new ring of eight bells with a tenor of approximately 3cwt in F using the very latest in small-bell fitting designs. The ring incorporates five used bells (some located by the Keltek Trust) and three new bells were cast by Higby and Bowditch. A new steel frame was installed and the existing bell was rehung for electronic chiming. New access ladders have been fitted. (Matthew Higby & Co Ltd.)

Titchborne, St Andrew. The bellframe has been strengthened. New stay bolts have been fitted. New double pulleys have been fitted to the base of the bellframe to reduce the amount of draw in the intermediate chamber. (Whitechapel Bell Foundry Ltd.)

Work planned or in hand for 2014 and beyond:

Hawkley, SS Peter & Paul. To replace the existing canon retaining headstocks on three of the bells. Overhaul of pullies, clappers and bearings etc. (Contractor unknown.)

Monk Sherborne, All Saints. To rehang the bells with new fittings into the existing bell frame. Four of the bells require tuning. Some strengthening of the bell frame. (Whites of Appleton Ltd.)

Basingstoke, All Saints. To augment the existing ring of nine to form a ring of ten. (Contractor unknown.)
