PEAL RECORDER’S REPORT

Tower Bell Peals

There were 110 tower bell peals rung during the year. Twenty-two of these were rung at Bishopstoke, making it the leading tower once again!

The first peal on 14 by a resident Guild band was scored at Winchester Cathedral on January 1. In the same month Chris Kippin conducted a peal of Cambridge Surprise Major using the same composition as his father did in January 1947. This marked the 50th anniversary of the first peal of Surprise to use a “single”.

Ringers at Hursley scored their first local band peal in February with a peal of Cambridge Surprise Royal and Bishopstoke rang their first local band peal of Surprise Royal (Yorkshire) in October. In April a long length peal was rung for the Guild at Lyme Regis (12,600 Chartres Delight Royal). This was the first time that a new method had been rung to a record length of more than 10,000 changes.

At the end of August the nation learned of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Five peals were rung by the Guild in her memory. On a happier note four peals were rung in celebration of the Golden Wedding Anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip in November.

Ten people rang their first peal during the year. They are: Jennifer J Soar, Jonathan C Twinley, David C W Richards, Sally J Pickett, Sue Clements, Richard Joyce, Amanda Stilton, Howard Carter, Douglas H Johnson and Greg R Hunt.

Handbell Peals

It is heartening to see handbell peals appearing in the Guild report once again, five more than last year. A simplistic analysis would be that five handbell peals were rung by five people whose surnames all begin with the letter “C”!
